Notes

Triplex Part 2 is the second in a three part series of EPs which sees a return to Tycho Brahe's original direction, as established on their first album Cassiopeia in 2001, and further explored on 2006's Atlantic.

Toyzilla (originally entitled Toyzilla: a short requiem for small boxes) is an instrumental concept piece based on using only the smallest synthesizers in the studio, and their inherent limitations. The piece was composed using Stylophone, Casio VL-1, Roland TB-303 and TR-606, and a Coron DS-7 Drum Synce. The largest of these measures around 295 x 145mm, the smallest only 115 x 60mm. A sampled kick drum and some percussion sounds were overdubbed for the Triplex release.

Triplex Part 2 also sees the first proper release of 1985 in its original arrangement, having been previously released in remix form as a single, while a working mix/demo version was included on 2010's Modern Synthpop compilation.

Notes

Triplex Part 1 is the first in a three part series of EPs, and picks up where Tycho Brahe's 2006 album Atlantic left off. During the time of recording what would become the Triplex series of EPs, the band went through several personnel changes, and suffered the loss of their studio in Brisbane's devastating flood of January 2011. This resulted in a long period of rebuilding and recovery, only to be followed by yet another flood scare, and ultimately a complete relocation of the band's facility to higher, safer ground. Overall, this delayed the finalisation of the Triplex EP series by at least two years.

The founding duo of the band, Ken Evans and Georgina Emery, emerging from this period of adversity with a new resilience, focus, and strength of purpose, elected to continue with the project. After a brief dalliance with Hi-NRG dance music (Sex Rocket, 2012), the Triplex EP series sees a return to Tycho Brahe's original direction, as established on their first album Cassiopeia in 2001, and further explored on 2006's Atlantic.

Early mixes of Loveless and Arizona were previously made available via social media, but appear on Triplex with updated mixes and of course have been professionally mastered for final release.

Liner Notes

Super Hot Robot is the new digital single that continues Tycho Brahe's side-exploration of vocoder-driven mid '80s Hi-NRG novelty cowbell dance music. In a perfect world, 2012's Sex Rocket CD and download single would have also been released on 12" vinyl by some obscure Italo disco hi-nrg label, and Super Hot Robot would have been on the flip.

Enjoy :-)

Liner Notes

The concept: place Tycho Brahe in a recording studio and have the band perform a selection of songs live, just as they would at a gig, so the live energy can be captured in a controlled environment for posterity.

The reality: the same lack of control applies, and before we know it we're dealing with poor sound monitoring, equipment breakdowns, microphone spill and general confusion.

The truth: You get what you paid for... We did. Did you?

The five songs on the EP represent a couple of band favourites, a cover for a good friend, and some requests from the eternally patient long term die hard fans of Tycho. To you, we shout "Thankyou!" This is for you.

Recorded live at Tall Poppy Productions, Sumner, Queensland, Australia during the extraordinarily late hours of August 25th 2010. Engineered by Jack, mixed by Ken Evans at Tycho Central.

Excerpt:

Found a Polaroid from 1985...

This recording is an homage to those days. A novelty. An oddity. A pastiche. A lot of fun to create. A song celebrating the year 1985, remixed in the style of 1985's greatest synthpop hit maker, Giorgio Moroder. A glimpse of what Tycho may have sounded like if it had existed at that time.

...

Dedicated to Max the Studio Cat, a member of our Tycho family - sadly missed, never forgotten.

Notes

The cover art is as notable a departure from TB's usual style as the remixes themselves. The zebra print was inspired by a shirt Ken wore in 1985, complete with thin leather tie.

The release is a celebration of 1985, in Arthur Barrow's words "So authentic it hurts!"

Notes:

Originally planned as two EP/MCDs, Tasty became one single 'budget album' style EP after various problems required remastering and other expensive changes. Along the line, tainted/who was stripped of its Dr Who samples, after the BBC declined permission for their use. The title of the track had to be changed to remove the copyrighted "who" and thus became Tainted Love vs The Doctor.

The final cut gave tychfans a fantastic collection of new tracks, covers and remixes. Modified or not, tainted finally made it to CD and Delos could grace the home stereos of tychfans as well as live PAs. The Real Life / Tycho remix tradeoff produced a fabulous version of White Room; showing what great work can do with a great original track. All tracks deserve their own writeup, but in reality the record speaks for itself - get your copy and find out why.

...and yes, that is Max the Studio Cat in the artwork :)

Notes:

100 copies of this four track tape were made. They were used as promos and sold at gigs, often as a package with the classic black t-shirt with original white logo. One of these tapes found its way into the hands of future TB drummer Stephen Birt. The cover features the "International Bright Young Thing" photo; and also has a "secret panel" which lets you refold it, so that the black and red TB logo can be displayed as the front cover.

The tape was labelled with Upbeat Side and Downbeat Side... Upbeat side - Dreams of Dying, Military Option. Downbeat side - Sentence, White Room.

"Military Option" was originally written by Ken in 1987 when he was part of a House duo in Adelaide. "Dreams of Dying" had a working title of "Fear of Flying" during its composition. A 7 minute instrumental entitled "Cassiopeia" was also recorded during these sessions, but not included on the cassette. This track is way cool.

Notes:

Only 50 copies of "Tycho Brahe - the Promotional Cassette" were produced. They were used as promos and occasionally given away to fans at gigs. TB retain two tapes for posterity. One tape remains in the hands of David Beevers, resident sound engineer with the Human League.

By this stage TB had been performing as the duo of Ken Evans and Georgina Emery for about six months. Previously TB was Ken Evans, with invited guest vocalists and occasional lyrical input from Georgina Emery. TB recorded all of the songs in their repertoire as a personal "snapshot" of what they sounded like at the time. The songs recorded were: Armistice, Seventeen, Leap, White Room, Marianne, Sanctify, Sentence, Atmosphere, Free, Total Kaos. Atmosphere is a cover of a Joy Division song, and this recording of Total Kaos was radically different to that released in 1994.
